Hot Rumor: At the party, JA amused himself by tossing twenty dollar bills on the floor and watching people scramble.
I comforted myself with a sample of the new JA tanning lotion, Chocolait à l´Orange, which smells tasty and has a light tint that looks great over a sunless tan. The JA exhibitors revealed John Abaté International is coming out with a new version of their sunless tanning product which will smell different, be darker, and contain a color guide.
As it is not due out until the summer of 2001, we shouldn't count on any of that being final. And, personally, I think they should leave it the heck alone. It's too good of a product to mess with. If they want to come out with an additional product that has a bronzer in it, fine.
At the large Mystic Tan booth, a lone Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader was signing posters for a very long line of people. Mystic Tan made a huge splash at the Expo with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, who have chosen Mystic Tan as their official tan.
I talked to one of the Mystic Tan exhibitors, who told me why Mystic Tan was superior to Mist-On Tanning.
Then I went back to Dr. Laughlin's booth to hear how Mist-On Tan was superior to Mystic Tan.
Since the differences are hard to explain to the average tanning salon owner, Dr. Laughlin encourages prospective buyers to personally try both systems to see which they prefer.
An easily understandable difference lies in how the units are sold. A tanning salon can buy the Mist-On unit outright. With the Mystic Tan, the salon owners give the unit floor space in return for a share of the profit, but the unit is maintained by a Mystic Tan area franchise operator, who is also responsible for training personnel and promoting Mystic Tan locally.
Since Mystic Tan does all the work, you'd think they would be everywhere, but Mystic Tan has stringent standards which limits the number of tanning salons qualified for their product.
Dr. Laughlin's Mist-On Tan [do you think I can start referring to him as Tom at this point? I think it would be okay] is not restricted to tanning salons, and can be placed in spas, gyms, you name it. The terms of the agreement between Mystic Tan and Mist-On limits Mystic Tan to existing salons only.
Another extremely noticeable difference between the two is that the Mist-On Tan unit doesn't have a door. Dr. Tom explained that there are high and low pressure areas within the unit to cause the mist to circulate evenly, so a door isn't needed to trap the mist inside. That boggled my mind for a while.
